How has your role evolved since you started, and what have you learned along the way?

From Marker to Manager: Years of Growth and Skill Development at Alpha One.

Since starting at Alpha One as a writing marker at the age of 15, my journey has been one of continual growth and learning. Over the years, I have moved from behind-the-scenes academic support to frontline roles in administration and tutoring, and eventually into leadership positions. Each role added new layers to my skill set, from developing written feedback for students, to handling customer queries, to leading teams and overseeing operations. I have learned how to communicate professionally with both satisfied and dissatisfied customers, collaborate effectively with colleagues, and make thoughtful decisions as a manager. As a General Manager, I have had to learn to think critically and strategically, balancing empathy with accountability. My perspective has widened significantly; I now approach problems with a focus on long-term impact, team wellbeing, and business sustainability. Each stage in my journey taught me to adapt, stay curious, and grow from feedback.

What first drew you to Alpha One, and what has kept you motivated to stay and grow within the organisation?

The Alpha One Difference: Nurturing Talent Through Empowering Leadership

I was initially drawn to Alpha One because of its welcoming and collaborative team culture. As a high school student, the chance to work with like-minded peers in a positive and ambitious environment was incredibly appealing.  What has kept me at Alpha One is the culture, paired with a strong commitment from leadership to provide growth opportunities and invest in their staff.  I have had the chance to work across several departments and learn from experienced leaders like our branch directors, CEO and CFO. Their guidance has been instrumental in helping me navigate new challenges and develop professionally. Over time, my perception of Alpha One has shifted from being more than ‘just a tutoring centre’ to being a dynamic organisation where young professionals can truly build valuable skills. There is a clear drive to improve, not only for students but for staff too, and  that is something that continues to inspire me to give my best.

Can you share any key milestones or turning points in your journey with Alpha One as a General Manager?

Shaping a Leader: Key Challenges and Breakthroughs in My General Manager Role

One of the most defining milestones for me as General Manager was leading the coordination of our OC and Selective holiday programs. It was the first time I had to simultaneously manage multiple teams, ensure deadlines were met across departments, and oversee a project from start to finish. That experience significantly strengthened my ability to manage workflows and helped refine my leadership style. Another turning point was learning how to set boundaries with team members who I had previously worked alongside in non-leadership roles. With the help of other senior staff, I developed the confidence to have constructive, professional conversations while still maintaining positive relationships. These experiences taught me the value of preparation, thoughtful communication, and the importance of data in decision-making. They shaped me into a more proactive leader who can manage both operational details and team dynamics effectively.

What do you think makes Alpha One a distinctive place to work and build a career?

An Energetic Ecosystem: How Alpha One Fosters Learning and Internal Progression

Alpha One stands out because of its energetic, supportive culture and its commitment to staff development. With an average staff age around 20 to 21, the environment is fast-paced but collaborative, where everyone is open to learning and sharing.  There is also a genuine focus on growth both for students and staff. Many roles are available across departments, and  it is common to see people moving into new positions as they gain experience. As someone  has worked in academic, admin, finance, and leadership roles, I have seen firsthand how flexible and open Alpha One is to internal progression.  There is also a strong network of peers studying similar degrees, which creates a sense of community beyond work. What makes the biggest difference, though, is the way upper management supports and mentors staff.  There is always someone ready to guide you, challenge you, and help you grow.

What advice would you give to someone who’s considering applying for a role at Alpha One?

Thriving at Alpha One: Lessons from My Experience

If you are considering a role at Alpha One, my biggest advice is to show initiative and be consistent in your efforts. This is a workplace where hard work and curiosity are noticed. Actively seeking out opportunities, asking questions, and putting your hand up when something needs to be done will help you stand out and progress. One thing I wish  I would have known when I started was just how many different roles existed across the company. Early on, I was unsure of where I could go next, but since then, Alpha One has done a great job developing clear career pathways. New staff now have a much better sense of what they can aim for. If  you are someone who enjoys learning, values teamwork, and wants to grow professionally, Alpha One is a great place to start and build your career.
