NSW Top 100 Public Primary Schools for 2026: Academic Rankings and Opportunity Class Pathways Explained

Every year, thousands of NSW families face the same question: which public primary school gives my child the best start? The Daily Telegraph has released its ranking of the top 100 public primary schools in NSW, drawing on NAPLAN data alongside a range of school performance indicators.

This blog explores that ranking, what it measures, and how it can serve as a useful reference point for families navigating primary school decisions, including those considering the OC pathway.

What Is the Ranking and How Was It Compiled?

The Daily Telegraph analysed data from approximately 5,000 Australian public schools, drawing on NAPLAN results for Years 3 and 5 across reading, writing and numeracy. The methodology incorporates student-to-staff ratios, attendance rates and socio-educational status to produce a composite picture of school performance.

The ranking uncovers which public primary schools are consistently producing strong academic outcomes, and where those schools are concentrated across the state. The results show a clear clustering of top-performing schools in Sydney's north and north-west, though the list includes schools from a range of communities and school sizes, reflecting that strong outcomes are not exclusive to any one postcode or demographic.

This ranking is a reference-based list and does not represent official NSW Government data. NAPLAN measures a specific set of literacy and numeracy skills at two points in primary school. It does not capture curriculum breadth, teaching quality, extracurricular programs, school culture or student wellbeing. This list is best used as a starting point for research, particularly for families comparing catchment zones, planning a move, or looking to understand how local schools are performing academically.

The table below includes an OC indicator, noting which schools on the list host an Opportunity Class. This is not part of the original ranking criteria. It is included as an additional layer of context for families who are thinking about the OC pathway. More information about what Opportunity Classes are and how they work is in the section below.

Understanding the Limitations of This Ranking

Academic rankings of this kind provide a useful but incomplete picture. The schools at the top of this list have demonstrated consistently strong NAPLAN outcomes, and that is meaningful data. However, rankings based on standardised testing do not reflect everything that makes a school the right fit for a particular child.

Factors such as leadership stability, teaching culture, learning support, student wellbeing programs, extracurricular opportunities and community engagement all contribute significantly to a child's experience and development. Two schools with similar NAPLAN scores can offer very different environments, and the reverse is true as well.

Parents are encouraged to use this ranking alongside school visits, conversations with the school community, and a review of each school's individual profile on the My School website. The ranking is a data point, not a definitive guide to school quality.

What Are Opportunity Classes?

Opportunity Classes are accelerated classes within regular NSW public primary schools, designed to provide a more challenging learning environment for academically gifted students in Years 5 and 6. Entry is competitive. Students must sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test during Year 4, and places are available only at schools designated as OC hosts by the NSW Department of Education. The test assesses ability across Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills.

For families with children currently in Years 3 or 4, the OC column in the table above provides a quick reference for which high-performing schools host this pathway. Students from any NSW public primary school are eligible to sit the placement test regardless of where they are currently enrolled.

Preparing Your Child for the OC Test

For families whose children are showing strong academic ability and who are considering the OC pathway, early preparation is one of the most effective steps a parent can take. The OC Placement Test is a specific exam that rewards familiarity with the format, question types and time demands involved.

Alpha One offers a range of resources to support families at this stage:

  • Access free mock tests to practice at home and gauge where your child currently sits.

  • Use the OC Test Calculator to see which OC schools may be within reach based on entry scores.

  • Explore OC tutoring courses covering English, Maths and Thinking Skills in small group settings.

  • Join the OC parent community to connect with other families going through the same process.

If your child would benefit from more structured support, a free trial is available to help you assess whether our courses are the right fit before committing.
